This paper aims to define the notion of modernism that is at work in Coetzee by reference to Watt, Eagleton and Fried, and suggests that Cora Diamond’s Wittgenstein is a modernist philosopher in just that way. It proceeds to examine how Coetzee defines the realism of his ‘Elizabeth Costello’ in terms of embedding and embodying; and ends by bringing in Diamond as a reader of Coetzee who aspires to delineate a Wittgensteinian philosophy that is equally realist in its aspirations.
