The Department of Psychosocial Studies presents:

Professor Belinda Mandelbaum (University of São Paulo) – Psychoanalysis and Social Context in Latin America: Repetition and Creation

This series of three linked seminars discusses the tensions between repetition and creation in the  transmission of Psychoanalysis to Latin America, with particular emphasis on Brazil and Argentina, two countries with an extraordinarily high density of psychoanalysts. The seminars explore some ways through which the local psychoanalytic institutions remained fixated on the original European models of psychoanalysis and closed to a broader dialogue with surrounding society; and, on the other hand, some alternative psychoanalytic experiences that developed a socially-engaged set of practices allowing them to question the ideologies at work in the psychoanalytical field. The seminars are open to all.
