Thompson’s Making of the English Working Class, published in 1963, has been one of the most influential works of history in the twentieth century, and of huge significance to the historical study of society, culture, politics and economics since its publication. Half a century on, the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities discusses the heights, and the lows, of the significance of this remarkable and still enormously popular book.
