Professor Giana Eckhardt (RHUL) – Consuming Buddhists
How do Chinese Buddhists incorporate their non-materialist beliefs into the increasing consumerism which permeates modern Chinese society? A Buddhist worldview can encompass the Gucci brand as easily as it can the famed Shaolin Temple, and we demonstrate how Chinese Buddhists demythologize spiritual and marketplace mythologies to participate in global capitalism.
