Professor Barry Langford (RHUL) – Sex, Violence, Art: Framing the new American Cinema
In 1967 Time Magazine hailed the birth of a “New American Cinema”. This lecture will examine how a multi-faceted US film culture, emerging during the 1960s, contributed to and helped shape that cinema’s distinctive sensibility: formal ambition and innovation, challenging and topical content, and a reinvigorated awareness of film’s artistic and social significance or as Time summarised it, “Sex, Violence, Art”.
