This paper will deal with the growth in escapes by convict prisoners from Sydney and their arrival as ships deserters in South America. His paper will also cover the routes of repatriation of both deserters and mariner prisoners of war from the Spanish Americas to Britain and American New England. The elaborate and trusted system of parole and passports will be covered, along with the rapid growth of smuggling to and from the Spanish Americas in pursuit of silver bullion to prosecute the war against Napoleon.
