A Tunnel to the Beginning of Time: experimental physics at the LHC

Dr Veronique Boisvert (RHUL) – A Tunnel to the Beginning of Time: experimental physics at the LHC

Last spring, the Large Hadron Collider resumed its operations at CERN in Switzerland. The particle collisions now involve energies never before achieved in the laboratory and may shed light on new fundamental particles and potentially revolutionise our concept of space-time! In this lecture, Dr Boisvert will review some significant discoveries already made by the ATLAS
detector (including the famous Higgs particle) and explain what we might expect to learn from the new data being produced at the world’s largest experiment.
