The Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities presents:
Michael Löwy – Masterclass 2: Marxism and Romanticism, from Karl Marx to Jose Carlos Mariategui
Romanticism is a cultural protest against the modern capitalist civilisation in the name of pre-capitalist values. Marx and Engels were not Romantics, but were inspired by Romantic writers, historians or economists, in the development of their anti-capitalist perspective. In the 20th century, one can find many Romantic Marxists, from the Surrealists to the First Latin American Marxist, the Peruvian Jose Carlos Mariategui.
