The Department of Physics at Royal Holloway University of London presents:

Dr. Anna Posazhennikova (RHUL) – Nobel Prize 2016: the rise of topology or what’s in a quantum vortex

The last decade witnessed an explosion of interest in applications of Topology (an exciting area of Mathematics) to Physics. The range of these applications is rather broad: from quantum information and quantum computation to condensed matter. The foundation for this rise of Topology in Physics was laid, however, in the 1970-s by three British born Physicists: D.J. Thouless, J. M. Kosterlitz and F. D. M. Haldane who predicted the existence of quantum vortices and were awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize.

In this evening lecture, suitable both for Physics and for Maths fans, Dr. Anna Posazhennikova, Royal Holloway Physicist, will discuss how Topology elucidates many mysteries of quantum matter and helps to shape modern Physics.
