Dr. Vladimir Antonov (RHUL) – Terahertz radiation: from Big Bang to nanotechnology

When the Big Bang happened there was a tremendous amount of energy release. The largest part of it was in terahertz range, a frequency corresponding to a wavelength between the infrared and radio-waves. This radiation is now known as the cosmic microwave background, and it is one of the most significant discoveries of the 20th century.

At the same time, terahertz radiation is also appropriate for the nanoscale world! And it has applications spanning from the material characterisation and security screening to the medical imaging. Join Dr. Vladimir Antonov to find out about the wide range of phenomena and applications of terahertz technology in everyday life. You will also witness the real time operation of the terahertz spectral camera based on quantum dot detectors, which Dr Antonov and his colleagues are currently building at Royal Holloway.
